About The Artist
My primary focus as an artist is on figure painting and portraiture. When I paint, the canvas becomes a looking glass into the lives, real or imagined, of my subjects. My subjects are family, friends and interesting people on the street. I enjoy establishing a bridge with them while working through various aspects of the painting. Oil paint provides an intimacy with my canvas and gives me time while I'm painting to think about “my people”. I work from photographs, old and new, and from life. While I'm painting, I have quiet, imagined conversations with them. The paintings “speak” to me with the story of their lives. Often, I feel I can climb into the canvas and look out at the viewer and try to imagine what my painting subjects might be saying to the viewer.
John Singer Sargent, Anders Zorn, Vilhelm Hammershoi, George Bellows, the charcoal drawings of Georges Seurat, and James Whistler are only a few on a long list of masters who inspire me. I love painting with fresh color and enjoy a bold stroke. I use the finest archival materials with which to paint and frame my work. The greatest care is taken in presenting my work to buyers. I am a college graduate with a B.A. degree in art and have continued my studies with contemporary masters in art. Memberships: The Geneva Lake Art Association (GLAA)
